Ingredients

Avocado hot dog

  • 8 hot dog sausages
  • 2 avocados, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 1½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ teaspoon black pepper, (freshly-cracked, or ground)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 2 teaspoon chopped cilantro
  • 8 hot dog buns

Chili hot dog

  • 8 hot dog sausages
  • 2 cup spicy chili con carne, (see tips above recipe)
  • ½ cup grated cheddar
  • 8 hot dog buns

Bacon-wrapped sausage

  • 8 hot dog sausages
  • 1 pack bacon, (8 oz [227 gr])
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • ½ cup sweet relish

Hot dog with cabbage

  • 8 hot dog sausages
  • 1½ cup shredded cabbage
  • 2 cup boiling-hot water
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons ketchup
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • ½ cup sweet relish
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • ¼ cup potato chips, crushed
  • 4 tablespoons mustard, (optional)

Preparation

1. Cooking sausage

  • 🌭 Avocado hot dog: Lightly boil or grill the sausages.
🌭 Chili hot dog: Lightly boil or grill the sausages.
🌭 Bacon-wrapped sausage: Wrap each sausage in two bacon strips. Grill until the bacon is crispy.
🌭 Hot dog with cabbage: Lightly boil or grill the sausages.

2. Assembling and serving

  • 🌭 Avocado hot dog: In a bowl, combine avocado, bell pepper, salt, black pepper, and cilantro. Drizzle with lime juice and mix.
Cut the bread, place the sausage in it and cover it with the avocado mix.
🌭 Chili hot dog: Heat the chili con carne in the microwave or stovetop.
Cut the bread, place the sausage in it, and cover with it chili con carne. Sprinkle with the cheddar cheese.
🌭 Bacon-wrapped sausage: While the sausage is cooking, heat the grill over very lo heat. Cook and stir the onion until it turns translucent. Remove from the heat and mix with the relish.
Garnish the sausages with potato chips, and the onion/relish mix.
🌭 Hot dog with cabbage: While the sausage is cooking, mix the boiling water with the cabbage. Let it rest until it reaches room temperature.
Remove the cabbage from the water and discard the liquid. Mix the cabbage with ketchup, mayo, and relish.
Cut the bread, place the sausage in it and cover with cabbage, crushed potato chips, and mustard.

Top tips

  • Chili hot dogs: A spectacular combination. The bread soaks in all the juiciness and flavors from the chili, and it turns into a party in your mouth. You can also use canned chili con carne, or better yet, try this recipe. You could also use this Texas Roadhouse chili recipe.
  • Bacon-wrapped sausage: You don't need a bun to enjoy a good dog. Good quality crispy bacon-wrapped sausage topped with sweet and sour relish. This can be a great low-carb combo if you top it with Dijon mustard sauce instead of relish. You can also serve it with our lovely Mayo ketchup sauce, or with Wasakaka sauce.
  • Avocado hot dog: You can make it with mini-baguette breads, they also make a good combination of texture and flavor.
  • Cabbage and potato hot dog: Inspired by my favorite Dominican hot dog, this is a simplified version you may love as much as I do.
  • Substituting sausage: For these recipes, I have used regular weiners, but you can try them with chicken or turkey hot dogs if you want. And now fiesta!

Serving suggestions

These are perfect with your favorite cold brew, and a side of potato chips.

I'm especially loving the bacon dog version, reminds me of my California days and the hot dog stands outside the Mexican markets. Yum!!

I have to say that this was a recipe inspired by a hot dog cart I saw in the streets of LA. They served it with chiles toreados.
