Orange and pepper hot and spicy beef.

Hot and spicy beef.

Why I ā¤ļø it

What I love about this dish is that it shows its Asian inspiration. It came about from the need to do something quickly with ingredients that we already had at home. But if you're looking for a quick and easy beef dish that the whole family will love, this lightly sweet and spicy orange, peppers, and beef recipe is perfect.

You don't need a marinade, a long cooking time, or to fry in a wok. You'll just need a skillet or large pan for it.

Ingredients

  • 1½ pound [0.7 kg] flank steak or sirloin
  • 1¼ teaspoon of garlic salt
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper (may need more)
  • 3 tablespoon oil for frying, (peanut, or sesame oil)
  • 3 bell pepper, cut into thin strips
  • 1 cup of orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon of cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon of brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon of cracked coriander seeds, (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of spicy-hot sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • Salt to taste (optional)

Before starting, please make sure you have all the ingredients and utensils ready.

Heat oil over high heat in the skillet or pan. Add the beef strips (careful with hot oil splatters!). Brown beef while stirring.

Once the meat is browned, lower the temperature to medium-high heat.

Step 4: Combine sauce ingredients and add

In a separate small bowl, mix the orange juice, cornstarch, tomato paste, brown sugar, coriander seeds, and hot sauce. Set aside.

Add the orange mixture to the pepper strips and cook and stir for 30 seconds once it starts to simmer, let it reduce until the sauce is a bit thick. Taste and add salt and pepper to taste if necessary. Serve immediately.

Top tips

  • The beef cooks very fast, both because of the cut used, and because they are cut very thinly.
  • Make sure not to overcook it so it remains tender and doesn't overdry.

Serving suggestions

This stir-fried beef goes great with white rice (I served it with this yellow rice). The rice will absorb the flavor from the sweet and spicy sauce to great results.

Variations

Instead of hot sauce, you can use 1 teaspoon of chili red pepper flakes, some minced jalapenos, or a tablespoon of chili oil. You can adjust the amounts to spice it up to your own liking.

If you have some fresh cilantro, sprinkle some leaves over it for extra color and flavor.

You can also add other vegetables if you have any; thinly sliced green onions can be stir-fried along with the bell pepper.

I am looking for some recipes to start doing the bentos for my husband's lunch and that is how I came across your blog. Very interesting recipes. I have bookmarked almost all the 'Side dishes' to use them as bento fillers especially cracked corn pilaf and russian potato salad (can't wait to try them). Carrot, cabbage salad and avacado salads would nicely fit in the vegetables section (I will be dividing my husband's lunch box into 4 categories: carbs, veggies, fruits, protein). I would also like to try various rice items that you have like rice and sweet corn, rice, pigeon peas and coconut, rice and beans.... Good lord! There are a lot of recipes in here that I would like to try and I am sure that I will be busy making some good food next few days! Thanks for such wonderful recipes
