Utensils and tools
- Clean bottle
- Small saucepan
Ingredients
- 3 oranges
- 4 cups vodka, [1 liter]
- 2Ā½ cup white sugar, (or brown, see notes}
Preparation
1. Peel
- Using a potato peeler, peel the oranges, making the peel as thin as possible to leave behind the white rind.Use the oranges for something else, we'll only use the peel.
2. Steep
- Mix the vodka and the orange peels. Put in a clean bottle and leave in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.
3. Strain
- Strain the vodka with a clean cloth, discard the peels, and set the vodka aside.
4. Make syrup
- In a saucepan, mix 1 cup of water and the sugar and boil over low heat until only a third of the liquid is left.Cool to room temperature. Mix the syrup with the vodka and let it sit overnight for any solids to settle at the bottom.
5. Serving
- Chill before serving.
Top tips
- Take into consideration that the preparation time does not include the two weeks for steeping.
- Use white sugar if you want it lighter in color and brown if you want it darker. For the ones in the photos, I used brown sugar.
- When peeling the orange, it's important to leave the white part out of the peels; it would add bitterness to the liqueur instead of the sweet orange taste we'd expect.
- Once ready, you can keep it refrigerated for up to two months.
